In the village of Geismar, pagans gathered each winter to offer sacrifices beneath the “Thunder Oak.” St. Boniface, armed with nothing but faith and an axe, felled the mighty oak in Christ’s name. When no wrath came, he proclaimed the fir tree behind it a new symbol: the Christ-tree—of peace and eternal life.
